PULL THE FLAG.
Flag Football — The fast, non-contact game for boys and girls in Wisconsin — a WSS parent guide.
Wisconsin Sports Services (WSS), a Madison-based youth sports organization, runs Badgerland Flag Football — youth flag football leagues and camps for boys and girls across Wisconsin, kicking off with our inaugural fall league. Here’s how the game works, what kids learn at each level, and why it’s become one of the fastest-growing youth sports in America.

The Basics
How Flag Football Works
Flag football is football with the contact removed. Teams run and pass downfield to score touchdowns just like tackle — but instead of tackling, defenders pull a flag from the ball carrier’s belt, and the play is dead. No helmets, no pads, no collisions: all the strategy, speed, and touchdown celebrations of football in a non-contact game.
Younger Players
Small-Sided Games
Beginners play small-sided formats (like 4v4) on shortened fields, which means more touches and more playing time for every kid. Playbooks stay simple — mostly running plays with passing added as confidence grows — and every player rotates through positions, from quarterback to receiver, so everyone learns the whole game.
Older Players
Strategy and Speed
As players advance, team sizes and fields grow (5v5 and up), playbooks balance running and passing, and defenses start mixing man-to-man and zone coverage. For the oldest groups, flag football becomes a genuine chess match — route trees, reads, and no-run zones — that builds football IQ for whatever form of the game comes next.
The Sport to Watch
Girls Flag Football
Girls flag football is exploding — it’s becoming a sanctioned high school sport across the country and joins the Olympics in 2028. WSS offers girls the chance to develop their skills in a supportive environment as the sport takes off in Wisconsin, whether on co-ed teams or in girls-focused play.
