Girls Softball — Fastpitch leagues, skills & team levels for girls in Wisconsin — a WSS parent guide.
Wisconsin Sports Services (WSS), a Madison-based youth sports organization, runs Badgerland Softball — girls fastpitch softball leagues, tournaments, and camps across Wisconsin, overseeing recreational leagues, select teams, and travel teams statewide. This guide walks through how girls develop in the sport and which team level fits your daughter.
The Development PathGirls Softball by Age & Level
Ages 5–8
First Swings
Young players start with the basics — gripping and swinging the bat, catching with two hands, throwing with proper form — often beginning with a tee or coach-tossed pitches. The focus is fun and confidence: softball taught as a game girls want to come back to, in a positive, safe, and supportive environment.
Ages 9–12
Real Fastpitch
This is where softball becomes its own sport. Girls learn the windmill pitching motion, slap hitting and bunting, stealing on the release, and the faster infield rhythm that separates fastpitch from baseball. League play adds situational thinking — where’s the force, when to tag, how to communicate on a pop fly — while coaches keep development ahead of results.
Ages 13–14
Competitive Play
Experienced players refine pitch selection, defensive positioning, and game strategy, and many begin weighing select or travel ball. Tournament weekends teach girls to compete, reset after a tough inning, and lead younger teammates — skills that carry into high school ball and beyond.
Choosing a Level
Rec, Select, or Travel?
Recreational leagues are the entry point — local, low-pressure, everyone develops. Select teams add tryouts and a more competitive schedule while staying regional. Travel teams compete in weekend tournaments across the state and beyond. WSS oversees all three levels in Wisconsin — see our 2026–27 events for tournament dates.

Questions Parents AskGirls Softball FAQs
What age can girls start playing softball?
Most girls start around ages 5–8 with tee or coach-toss formats, and move into real fastpitch with player pitching around age 9.
What’s the difference between softball and baseball for kids?
Fastpitch softball uses a larger ball, a smaller diamond, and underhand windmill pitching — the game is faster-paced in the infield and is the standard competitive path for girls in Wisconsin.
Should my daughter play rec, select, or travel softball?
Start with recreational league play; move to select when she wants more competition and can commit to tryouts and a fuller schedule; consider travel ball when weekend tournaments excite her more than they exhaust you.
Does WSS run softball tournaments?
Yes — Badgerland Softball runs leagues, tournaments, and camps across Wisconsin. See the softball platform page and 2026–27 events for registration details.
